"The Name Above All Names"
Jesus Christ is the most powerful name in the universe. Demons tremble and flee, sickness departs, and people either get angry or shout “hallelujah,” but no one is indifferent to the “Name above all names.” When the eternal name of Jesus is proclaimed, everything is shaken. God the Father gave His Son Jesus the name above every other name: “…Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men…and being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2: 5-11).
Every person alive today in the earth, or that has ever lived on the earth, every saint and angel in heaven, every damned soul and demon in hell, and the devil himself will bow their knee and will confess with their tongue the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We can choose to bow now and receive everlasting life, or we can bow later in hell, but we will bow. Is it any wonder that the demons and atheists and occultists and the ACLU get so riled at the mention of Jesus’ name? As long as people use the term “God,” most people are satisfied. Man has been creating “gods” in his own image to worship for ages. But the name of Jesus is explicitly powerful, with no misunderstanding as to whose name is invoked. Many people cannot utter that holy name unless it is taken in vain or used in an oath—a frightening thought, considering that one day we will look into His eyes that are flaming with fire and give an account of every idle word we have ever spoken!
The Book of Acts declares of Jesus: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved…And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 4:12; 2: 21) Jesus told His disciples that these signs would follow those who believed in Him: “In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues, they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mark 16: 17-18). Jesus told His followers: “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name I will do it. If you love Me, keep my commandments” (John 14: 13-15).
Everything that we will ever need: salvation, healing, provision, protection, deliverance, forgiveness and miracles, is found in the precious name of Jesus. Because Jesus Christ is mankind’s greatest need and God deserves the praises of all men, Jesus gave a sobering warning to those who are ashamed to proclaim His name to others: “Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. And he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God” (Luke 12: 8-9).
Jesus also warned against using His name without obeying His word: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And I will declare to them, ‘Depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 8: 21-23) It is a fearful thing to misrepresent Jesus and bring reproach upon His wonderful name.
Thank God for His mercies that are new every morning! He is faithful and just to forgive us when we fall if we confess our sins and repent. If we live to praise and lift up His marvelous name, we shall have the pleasure of hearing Jesus speak these words to us: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34).
“O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, You who set Your glory above the heavens!” (Psalm 8:1)
